Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® is a psychobiological method for resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. It is designed to help reset the nervous system, restore inner balance, and enhance resilience to stress. Through its body-based approach, Somatic Experiencing® also facilitates living with more regulation and ease.

Somatic Experiencing® was developed by Peter Levine, Ph.D. It is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely  traumatized. Animals in the wild utilize innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energy arousal associated with defensive survival behaviors. These mechanisms provide animals with a built-in “immunity” to trauma that enables them to return to normal after highly “charged” life-threatening experiences. Symptoms of unresolved trauma and chronic stress, however, may accumulate in our human bodies, resulting in mental and physical health concerns.

Somatic Experiencing® encourages the release and resolution of these accumulated symptoms.
